What to Expect from Virtual Orientation

This time of year we would normally be welcoming new friends and faces to our campus for in-person New Student Orientation. However, this summer we switched to a virtual format. We know there are a lot of changes, so here’s what to expect.

What is the point of Orientation?

New Student Orientation is your opportunity to learn about PSU and prepare for your first term. You will get details about campus life, student services, and degree requirements. Online Orientation includes details about scheduling a virtual appointment with your academic advisor. Once you complete Orientation you’ll get access to register for classes and you can schedule a phone or video appointment with your academic advisor who can help you with course selection.

What’s required and what’s optional?

There are many events, some mandatory and some optional, which lets students create the Orientation experience they would like.

Required: All incoming students must complete online orientation. It is required for incoming fall students in order to gain course registration access for their first term. You can sign up right now for New Student Orientation.

Optional:

  • Connect2PSU Days On Wednesdays & Fridays during the summer we will be hosting Connect2PSU days. These are virtual half-day programs with presentations and webinars from offices across campus, like Financial Aid and the Transfer and Returning Student Resource Center. These programs build on what you already know about PSU. You can sign up for as many of these as you would like. And, some are dedicated time for socializing with other new students like yourself. We will open registration for these events soon. Family members are welcome to join you for these virtual events.
  • Virtual Resource Center Events On some Mondays, we are co-hosting virtual events with resource centers (Campus Rec, the Queer Resource Center, Cultural Resource Centers) across campus to connect students with those resources. We will open registration for these events soon.
  • Family-focused Virtual Events We will host family-focused virtual events in July, August, and September. These are for families to learn about what they can expect as their student takes on the first year at PSU.

Learn more about these virtual events and sign up.

How do I complete Orientation?

Once you sign up, you will get a custom link to your virtual orientation. Complete it the week you schedule it because your link will expire after one week.

Orientation covers topics like campus life, student services, how to select and sign up for classes and how to connect with an academic advisor. Students can register for classes after completing the virtual Orientation.

We estimate it will take about 90 minutes to complete from start to finish. You can leave and return to where you left off using the unique link sent to your email.

Orientation Leaders will call students to touch base the same week they receive access to their link to Virtual Orientation.

What time do I have to be online for the Orientation?

Virtual Orientation is self-paced. You can go as fast or slow as you like. Orientation is a mixture of videos and text.

How do I reach out to my advisor?

Contact information will be included in your virtual Orientation. You will likely hear from your advisor, but you shouldn’t wait to hear from them to schedule an appointment.

Who do I contact if I have questions?

Contact us at orientation@pdx.edu. You can even send questions that are not orientation related and we’ll help you in the right direction.

We are excited to meet you!
