It’s true, college can be expensive. Fortunately, PSU has an extensive Scholarship Database, which lists the 400+ scholarships available through the school!
Scholarships are a kind of student funding that doesn’t need to be repaid. That’s free money to help you pay for school.
Scholarships are usually based on merit (good grades) and financial need and require an application. You can apply for most PSU scholarships through the PSU Online Scholarship Application. Some scholarships, however, have a separate application process, so check the Scholarship Database to make sure you’re getting the most money possible.
How It Works
There are three ways you can search for scholarships using the database:
- Category: Makes it easy for you to identify categories that apply to you and find related scholarships. There are 19 major categories to choose from.
- Keyword: Helps you find scholarships quickly, especially if your school has assigned a keyword to a certain scholarship.
- Description and name: Allows you to find scholarships that contain the word you’re searching for.
When you search for scholarships, you’ll see this:
What You’ll Find
Each scholarship in the database lists the requirements to apply, including if you have to be in a specific program, have a certain GPA, etc. Most of PSU’s scholarships are available to both domestic and international students. The database will also tell you how much money you can get for each scholarship.
We recommend you start a document to keep track of the scholarships that apply to you so you have all the information you need when you go to submit your Online Scholarship Application. Remember, some scholarships have a separate application process.
When to Apply
The Online Scholarship Application opens each academic year in October, and the deadline to submit the application is February 1.
The scholarships you apply for will be awarded for the following academic year, which means you’ll need to apply nearly a year in advance of when you’ll start college. Get your application together early, especially because some scholarships require letters of recommendation and essays.
Once you submit your application, you will be notified around mid-March if you’ve been awarded any scholarships.
How to Apply
Visit and apply for the PSU Online Scholarship Application!
When you use the online application system, you will be asked to create an account. You don’t have to submit your application when you create your account—you can save your application and return to it later.
And the best part? You will be automatically considered for the scholarships that match your qualifications. That means you don’t apply for specific scholarships but are considered for scholarships depending on the sections you complete. Make sure your application reflects the criteria for each scholarship you want to apply.
The PSU Scholarship Application requires two letters of recommendation, one academic and one non-academic. Academic recommenders (in most cases professors) provide important information about your intellectual abilities. When choosing a non-academic recommender, keep in mind that scholarship selection committees want to hear about significant and recent experiences. When you fill out your application, you will enter the names and email addresses of your references. The application sends an email within minutes to the addresses you provided requesting they submit letters of recommendation. You can track if the letters have been submitted on your account.
We also have a guide about how to ask for letters of recommendation, if you’re not sure where to start!
Of course, if you’re applying for a scholarship that has a separate application process, make sure to follow those instructions.
Schedule an appointment with a Student Financial Aid counselor, who can help you plan your scholarship strategy. These slots fill up pretty quickly, so make sure you schedule in advance.
